Using multimedia elements in addition to a conventional text version is an approach to increase the motivation of the learners and their learning success. To accomplish this task, the didactic side has to be considered from the beginning, the presentation of the information has do be tuned to the new medium and the possibility of interaction has to be thoroughly exploited. That includes:

  • Dynamic structures: The presentation considers the requirements of the users: Beginners get different information than experts, for example
  • Interactive shows: The learners can modify the experiment, the demonstration etc. They can add, omit or change elements
  • Consistent models: Conform interaction and presentation of all applets
To reuse and combine programming code, the animations are developed in a component-based way. As a target a framework was developed. The framework, the itBeanKit, guarantees the consistent user interface and interaction facilities. This framework offers the programmer basic classes and components which can be used to produce ItBeans. This way, programming applets becomes easier and faults more infrequent.

The framework-based approach is also sensible from the didactic point of view. The visual representation of the ItBeans should look alike for all interactive elements (ItBeans). The learner should be able to use the control of the ItBeans easily and every ItBean should react in the same way. The user wants to learn about multimedia technology, not about a program.

The programming language is Java, because Java guarantees  platform independence.
